How to Score 95%+ in Class 10 Maths (CBSE & ICSE): A Teacher’s Plan

Scoring 95% or more in Class 10 Maths is very achievable, for CBSE and ICSE alike. It takes the right order of work, enough practice in the board pattern and a habit of learning from mistakes. Here is the plan our Maths teachers follow with students.

    1. Master your textbook first

Every board paper is built on the prescribed textbook: NCERT for CBSE, and your school’s prescribed book for ICSE. Solve every exercise and every example before moving to extra books. Most lost marks come from gaps in basic chapters, not from difficult questions.

    2. Spend time where the marks are

In CBSE Class 10 Maths, Algebra (20 marks) and Geometry (15 marks) together carry 35 of the 80 board marks, followed by Trigonometry (12) and Statistics & Probability (11). Give these units the most practice. See the full table in our CBSE Class 10 marking scheme guide.

    3. Practise previous years’ questions

Solve at least the last 10 years’ board questions chapter by chapter. Patterns repeat: the same ideas come back with new numbers. Then add the official sample papers.

    4. Show every step

Board exams use step marking. A correct method with a small calculation slip still earns most of the marks, while a bare answer earns very little. Write the formula, substitute, simplify, and box the final answer with units.

    5. Keep an error notebook

After every test, write down each mistake, the correct method and the reason it happened: concept gap, careless slip or time pressure. Re-read it every week. Students who do this stop repeating the same mistakes within a few tests.

    6. Write full papers in exam time

From November, write complete papers in board timing at least once a week. Practise attempting the questions in a planned order, and keep 10–15 minutes at the end to check calculations.

    7. Don’t neglect the ‘easy’ parts

    Marks students often lose

    • Untidy graphs and constructions without proper labels
    • Missing units in mensuration answers
    • Not reading case-study questions fully
    • Skipping the ‘verify’ or ‘hence’ part of a question
    • Rounding off too early in calculations

How we help at Universal Tutorials

    • Weekly Maths Extra Practice Session (MEPS) with a Maths professor, worksheet-based at two levels, with one-to-one doubt solving and a weekly report to parents.
    • Chapter tests and full-portion mocks in the board pattern, corrected by your child’s own teacher, with model answers right after the test.
    • Daily doubt solving on Telegram for Maths and Science (classroom students).
    • UT study volumes with 10 years of previous board questions.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is 95% in Class 10 Maths realistic?

Yes, for a student who completes the textbook thoroughly, practises previous years’ questions and writes several full papers in exam time before the board exam.

Which chapters carry the most marks in CBSE Class 10 Maths?

Algebra carries 20 of the 80 board marks and Geometry 15, followed by Trigonometry (12) and Statistics & Probability (11).

How many hours a day should my child study Maths in Class 10?

Regular daily practice matters more than long hours. Around an hour of focused Maths practice on most days, plus a full paper each week from November, works well for most students.

Should my child use reference books for Class 10 Maths?

Only after finishing the prescribed textbook and previous years’ questions. At UT, students need only their textbook and the UT study volumes.
